John Z Robinson was born in Foxton 1953, educated at Foxton Primary School and Manawatu College, and served his jeweller’s apprenticeship in Palmerston North.
From 1978–80 he attended art school at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art, and has been a self-employed jeweller since 1998. He has exhibited prints and paintings in the Eastern Southland Gallery Gore; the Manawatu Art Gallery; the Bath House Museum and Art Gallery in Rotorua, and the New Zealand Consulate in New York. His jewellery is included in ‘The Scots in New Zealand’ exhibition at Te Papa, which runs from 2007–2010. He has had exhibitions in private dealer galleries throughout New Zealand.
Amongst his many commissions have been set designs for theatrical productions of School For Scandal, Twelfe Night, Entertaining Mr Sloane and The Pearl Fishers; and cover design for Caclin (Lincoln University) Canzona, The Journal of New Zealand Literature, SPORT 7, and Eat These Sweet Words: The New Zealand Anthology of Lesbian and Gay Poetry (ed. Sue Fitchett et al, Giant Press, 1999). Published Parallel Lines with Annie Villiers. John lives in Dunedin with partner Simon Daly.
