Lloyd Spencer Davis fits most easily into the category of creative non-fiction writing. He received the PEN(NZ) Best First Book for Non-fiction for Penguin: a season in the life of the Adelie Penguin, which is the story of Antarctica as seen through the eyes of a penguin. His follow-up, The Plight of the Penguin, won the Book of the Year at the 2002 NZ Post Children’s Book Awards, as well as winning the non-fiction category at the same awards. He received a CLL Writer’s Award, New Zealand’s premiere award for the support of non-fiction, to assist with the writing of his recently published book on Charles Darwin, Looking for Darwin.
In addition, Lloyd is a director and scriptwriter of natural history documentaries – his films having won 12 international awards to date; an award-winning photographer; and a university professor with over 90 scientific publications that have earned him such academic honours as a Fulbright Award, an Anzac Fellowship, and a Prince & Princess of Wales Science Award. In 1997, he received the Foundation for Research Science and Technology’s Merit Award for excellence in scientific communication.
Lloyd is currently Director of the world’s first university course in natural history filmmaking and New Zealand’s first centre for science communication. He lives in a small seaside community in Dunedin with his family and a chocolate labrador that is almost as lovable as it is naughty.
