RALPH MARKBY's long skiing career began in 1945 on the Rock and Pillar Range near Middlemarch. The opening of Coronet Peak in 1947 marked the beginning of his love affair with this beguiling, unspoiled mountain. During this period he also explored lesser known mountains and ski fields in Otago and Canterbury. In 1968 Ralph was a founder member of Treble Cone Ski Fields Ltd, and later became a director until the late 1970s. When he retired to Wanaka in 1990, Ralph’s skiing activities expanded to include heli-skiing and several trips to ski fields in Montana, Colorado and elsewhere in the United States. He continues to enjoy skiing at Cardrona and Treble Cone.
