There is a traditional framework of cultural values and practices upon which the majority of Samoan people structure their existence. But not only are there many different ways of connecting to one's culture – different ways of existing as a Samoan – there are differences in the ways individual Samoan people adapt to the challenge of living in an overwhelming Palagi environment.
My Own Shade of Brown looks at the problems and possibilties inherent in all new beginnings. It portrays the continuing search for an expression of identity in a place not yet fully familiar and the always inevitable struggle to preserve the known and understand the new.
Here, in a beautiful and unusual book, written and photographed by Tai Mulitalo, a young Samoan graduate of the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in Christchurch, six individuals speak openly about their lives and their own expression of their Samoan identity within a New Zealand context. Their highly individual stories and Tai Mulitalo's magnificent photographs reveal that every Samoan does indeed have his or her own shade of brown.
