The fact that Zillah is the last in Todd’s trilogy but can be read alone is a tribute to the strength of the writing that’s as rich and poetic as the story’s setting: the West Coast bush. Zillah is a book of memorable images, dialogue and incidents, that skilfully weaves two journeys: Zillah’s trip into the hinterland and the reflective journey she takes through some very difficult places in her mind (revealed through a series of expertly handled flashbacks). It’s a small character cast but each is sharply observed, well rounded and all too believable as they struggle with their desires and demons and voice their aspirations. Zillah means shade in Hebrew and this book explores the many meanings of that word in a subtle and engrossing way.
